Essay

My design was based upon the history of the Marathon Maple Festival Pageant. I decided to base my design on Art Nouveau. I wanted to make my poster have an elegant look, and use natural colors. My main focal point is the photograph. I wanted my poster to have a photograph as the main focal point, and not focus as much on the text. I used a asymmetrical design, and used a font that I feel demonstrates the “graceful-ness” of the pageant. The pageant is all about beauty, grace, and personality and I feel my design demonstrates that with the colors, font, and photograph.

The Marathon Maple Festival and Pageant

The Maple Festival and Pageant started in 1971. A group of more prominent people in the community realized that something should be done to try and promote the town, at the time things were kind of dying out in town; the milk plant closed, we used to have a lot of jobs in manufacturing and business in Marathon, and around then is when it started to die out. So, they wanted to do something to "put us on the map" and someone had heard of the Maple Festival that was held in Burton, Ohio. Five people went and talked to the people who organized it came back and started up a committee on it. The first Maple Festival was a nice spring weekend, and a lot of people came, so many that all the places with food ran out the first day. I have been told you couldn't even get into town from the four corners because it was so crowded. They had crafts and things in the highschool in the classrooms, and they constructed a makeshift sugar shack on Lovel Field because the one we have now wasn't built for a while. There were a lot of businesses on mainstreet that had various things, and all the churches had food and other stuff. There was a pancake breakfast in the school and the Masons had a buffet. The Methodist Church had a chicken barbecue like they have now. Also, the was no civic center or maple museum or any of those other building on Lovel Field, but there was stuff in the firehouse. And as I stated earlier, they ran out of food on the first day and everyone had to go back home and make more, and I was told everyone was pretty tired and surprised so many people came. The Pageant was also taken from Burton, and there was a comittee for that as well. I was told it hasn't really changed much except there is more talent involved, which I guess means the dancing and singing that now takes place at the current Pageants. The first Marathon Maple Festival Queen was a young lady by the name of Sarah Smith.

Maple Festival Pageant 2008 Stamp: Final

2008 Maple Festival Pageant Stamp Illustration

Name: Jessica Mosier
Name of Design: Maple Festival Pageant 2008
Software Used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0
Date: March 24, 2009
Paragraph: My stamp design was based upon the little town of Marathon’s annual Maple Festival. Every year towards the end of March or early April the Maple Festival “kicks off” with the annual Maple Festival Pageant on Friday night at 7:30. Young ladies in grades 9 through 12 are allowed to participate, and the number of girls who compete varies every year, usually it is between 25 to 35 girls who compete. The night consists of choreographed singing and dancing “numbers”, a long walk where each girl talks about her future plans, and other opportunities to talk to the audience based upon that year’s theme. By the end of the night five finalists are chosen, and then they must answer a series of questions for the judges, and the judges are giving points for 1 to 10 based on beauty, grace, and presentation. The finalists are then told what place they received, and the Maple Festival Queen is crowned. The Queen and her court are hostesses for the Maple Festival weekend, and also take part in parades and activities throughout the rest of the year. I chose to use the New York Movement and based my stamp on that style. When I think of the New York Movement I think of pop art, and the use of black, white, and red. I looked at various designs from the movement and wanted to give my stamp a pop art look, which is why I made the bodies black and white, and left the dresses and trophies in color, and I even amped up the colors for a more dramatic effect. Making the background black really helped give it more “pop”, and then the red border around the outside allowed my stamp to have an even more dramatic effect. I think pop art is very bold, colorful, and dramatic and my stamp gives off that same effect.

Compositional Devices - For example, Lady & Tramp's stamp could be split into a grid, and you would see that Tramp's nose would be placed on two intersecting lines in the grid, along with Lady's.
Type of Balance - Asymmetrical.
Illusion of Space/Depth - Because these stamps are using cartoon characters I feel there isn't much depth to them.
Relationship of Postive and Negative Space - There seems to be a well thought amount of positive and negative space; the designsare not too busy.
